From Inspiration to Mailbox: How a Junebug Ink Card Goes from Idea to Finished Product

Creating a greeting card isn't so different from creating a magazine story. Both begin with one question: "What story do we want to tell?"

People often ask where the ideas for Junebug Ink greeting cards come from.

Do they begin with a holiday?

A beautiful illustration?

A clever message?

The answer is...sometimes.

But more often than not, every Junebug Ink card begins with a story.

That's probably because before I founded Junebug Ink, I spent more than three decades in magazine publishing, working with extraordinary editors, designers, photographers, illustrators, printers, and production teams to create magazines that informed, inspired, and entertained millions of readers.

Today, although the format has changed from magazines to greeting cards, the creative process feels remarkably familiar.

Instead of producing a 120-page magazine, we're creating a single card.

But the goal is exactly the same:

Tell a meaningful story beautifully.

That's why every Junebug Ink card is created with the same care, collaboration, and attention to detail that goes into publishing a great magazine.

It Always Starts with an Idea

Every card begins with curiosity.

Sometimes inspiration comes from a family tradition.

Sometimes it's sparked by a conversation.

Sometimes it's a cultural celebration that deserves greater visibility.

And sometimes it's simply noticing what's missing from the greeting card aisle.

As I develop new concepts, I ask myself questions similar to the ones I asked throughout my editorial career:

  • What story needs to be told?

  • Who is this for?

  • Why does it matter?

  • What emotion should someone feel when they open it?

  • Will this still feel meaningful years from now?

Those questions shape every creative decision that follows.

Because at Junebug Ink, we're not just designing cards—we're creating moments of connection.

Just Like Publishing a Magazine, Collaboration Is Everything

One of the greatest gifts of my publishing career is the incredible network of creative professionals I've had the privilege of working alongside.

Many of those talented colleagues have become collaborators at Junebug Ink.

When a new card moves into development, I often work with award-winning:

  • Graphic designers

  • Artists

  • Illustrators

  • Letterpress and commercial printers

  • Production specialists

  • A seasoned production manager

It's very much like producing a magazine feature.

Editors shape the story.

Designers bring it to life visually.

Illustrators add personality.

Production experts ensure every detail is executed beautifully.

Printers transform digital files into something you can hold in your hands.

Every person contributes specialized expertise, and every perspective makes the final product stronger.

Although my name may appear as founder, Junebug Ink is truly a collaborative effort.

Design Is About More Than Looking Beautiful

Beautiful artwork certainly matters.

But beautiful design should also communicate something.

Every font.

Every illustration.

Every color palette.

Every paper choice.

Every envelope.

Every finishing detail is selected intentionally.

Does the artwork evoke joy?

Does the typography feel elegant?

Does the message sound authentic?

Does the card feel timeless rather than trendy?

These are the same kinds of editorial conversations that happen inside magazine publishing.

The best design doesn't compete with the story.

It helps tell it.

Every Card Goes Through Multiple Rounds of Refinement

Readers often imagine creative work happens in one magical moment.

It rarely does.

Every Junebug Ink card is reviewed, revised, refined, and reviewed again.

Messages are edited.

Colors are adjusted.

Typography is reconsidered.

Spacing changes.

Illustrations evolve.

Sometimes what seemed perfect in the first draft becomes dramatically stronger after thoughtful collaboration.

That's one lesson magazine publishing taught me early in my career:

Great creative work isn't rushed.

It's refined.

Why We Create Culturally Inclusive Greeting Cards

One of the biggest inspirations behind Junebug Ink was recognizing how many stories weren't being told.

For far too long, many people searched greeting card aisles hoping to find themselves reflected—and often came away disappointed.

Families.

Traditions.

Celebrations.

Everyday moments.

They deserved to be represented with authenticity and beauty.

That's why Junebug Ink creates culturally inclusive greeting cards that celebrate Black American life while inviting everyone to appreciate the richness of our shared culture.

Our mission isn't simply representation.

It's celebration.

Whether we're honoring Juneteenth, Father's Day, Christmas traditions, family recipes, music, weddings, graduations, or everyday milestones, we believe culture deserves beautiful design.

Our collection of premium Black greeting cards reflects joy, history, resilience, creativity, and connection.

And judging by the response from customers, museum gift shops, specialty retailers, and independent bookstores, we believe many others feel the same way.

Cards with Content

One thing that makes Junebug Ink different is our belief that greeting cards can do more than deliver a message.

Many of our cards include something extra.

Perhaps it's:

  • A family recipe

  • A curated playlist

  • Cultural history

  • Holiday traditions

  • Fun facts

  • Conversation starters

We often describe them as "cards with content."

That philosophy comes directly from my editorial background.

Magazine editors don't simply fill pages.

They create experiences.

At Junebug Ink, we approach greeting cards the same way.

A card can educate.

Inspire.

Entertain.

Spark conversations around the dinner table.

Become a keepsake.

When someone saves one of our cards long after the occasion has passed, we've accomplished exactly what we hoped to do.

Proudly Made in the USA

Quality matters.

It's one reason we're proud that every Junebug Ink greeting card is made in the USA.

Domestic production allows us to maintain high standards while supporting American manufacturing and working closely with trusted print partners who understand the level of craftsmanship we expect.

From paper stock to print quality to finishing details, every decision reflects our commitment to creating products that feel as premium as the stories they tell.

When someone opens a Junebug Ink card, we want them to notice the difference immediately.

Gratitude Is Part of Every Card

Building Junebug Ink has reminded me that creative work is never a solo endeavor.

Every collection represents the talent, generosity, and expertise of many people.

I'm deeply grateful to the award-winning designers who elevate every concept.

The artists and illustrators whose creativity brings our stories to life.

Our trusted printers whose craftsmanship transforms ideas into finished products.

Our experienced production manager who keeps countless details moving smoothly behind the scenes.

And, of course, our retailers, museum gift shops, independent bookstores, and customers who continue believing in our vision.

Every purchase supports an entire creative ecosystem.

Growing One Card at a Time

As a young company, every new customer matters.

Every retailer matters.

Every introduction matters.

The more people who discover Junebug Ink, the more opportunities we have to celebrate Black culture through thoughtfully designed stationery.

Growth isn't simply about selling more cards.

It's about reaching more people.

Helping someone find the perfect card for the first time.

Seeing a child recognize themselves in an illustration.

Watching families share recipes and playlists included inside our cards.

Partnering with retailers who believe inclusive products belong on every shelf.

Those moments remind us why we started.

More Than a Greeting Card

People sometimes assume greeting cards are simple products.

In reality, they're tiny storytelling platforms.

They celebrate love.

Honor traditions.

Capture memories.

Strengthen relationships.

Preserve culture.

That's why we approach every Junebug Ink card with the same care I once devoted to publishing a magazine.

Because every card tells a story.

Every detail matters.

Every collaboration counts.

And every envelope has the potential to brighten someone's day.

We're incredibly proud of what we've created so far—and even more excited about what's still to come.

Thank you for being part of the Junebug Ink story.

We can't wait to share the next chapter with you.
